Rupert Snell

Rupert Snell has written numerous Hindi course-books, while working primarily on pre-modern poetry in the Braj dialect. His 1990 paper 'The hidden hand: English lexis, syntax and idiom as determinants of modern Hindi usage' (South Asia Research 10:1) addresses an aspect of the subject of our mooted volume; translations from modern Hindi include H.R. Bachchan's autobiography In the Afternoon of Time (Penguin India, 1998).

Current projects include: an expanded edition of his 1991 book The Hindi Classical Tradition: a Braj Bhasa Reader; a study of the poetics of the Satsai of Biharilal (plus an English novel supplying a back story to Biharilal's life); and A Ramcharitmanas Reader. He teaches at the University of Texas at Austin. Prof. Snell, along with Prof. Rita Kothari, is also a collaborator for this conference.
